The seafront has been used by several types of people over the years. It has been used by locals searching for fish and crabs to eat, and also by smugglers landing their contraband. It's main use is, of course, for building sand castles, playing in the surf and eating ice cream!
In 1865, the Falmouth Hotel was opened just above Gyllyngvase beach and the tourist trade began. As the tourist trade flourished, more hotels sprung up. The Pendennis Hotel was built in 1893 by Falmouth Hotel Company. When the seafront road from Pendennis Point to Gyllyngvase beach was opened in 1908, more hotels began to pop up. The Queen Mary Gardens were opened in 1910. Gyllyngvase beach was popular with the Victorians and has remained popular ever since
Further along the seafront is Swanpool beach. It is much smaller than Gyllyngvase and gets it's name from the pool with swans in it (amazingly!) that can be found behind it. Further around the coast still is Maenporth beach.
