Helston's historic public houses

The Blue Anchor is a 15th Century inn, which is the oldest brewery in Cornwall . They still brew their own special ale 'Spingo' on the premises (there are only three other pubs in Britain that still brew ale on-site). Spingo is commonly known as being very potent stuff, especially if you venture to have more than the odd pint of it! The Blue Anchor used to cater for pilgrims who were on their way to St. Michael's Mount. It was origially a monk's rest house until Henry VIII got rid of the monasteries, then it became the local pub. At the height of the mining era, miner's received their weekly wages here (popular with the wives I'm sure!). It also has a skittle alley in the back.

The Angel Hotel is now a popular pub. It is a 16th Century house and has a 40 foot well next to the bar and a minstrel's gallery in the medieval dining room upstairs. The water in the well rises and falls with the weather. In the past, The Angel has been an Excise House, Posting House and Inland Revenue Office.

In a back doorway of the building, there was once a large stone, known as 'Helleston's Rock'. Unfortunately, it has now been removed, but you can still see where it was taken out if you look carefully. Legend has it that the devil threw the 'fiery stone' there! Other stories have included that it was a meteor, but no meteorite shower has ever been recorded in the area.
