Porthleven, Cornwall

Porthleven is situated on the coast 3 miles southwest of Helston. It is the UK's most southerly working port and is a beautiful fishing village. The harbour dates back to about 1825 and is the only west facing port in Cornwall. It is situated at the edge of the Atlantic and is very difficult to negotiate. It became very important for the shipping of tin and other ores from nearby mines.

Porthleven Pier

Porthleven also has a great history of smuggling and wrecking (like so many other Cornish ports), which was helped by the treacherous rocks around port. It is also becoming quite well known for its ferocious storms in winter. People often visit the village when there are strong winds to watch the waves crash over the sea wall and pier. On the 4th January 1998, 100mph winds sent waves crashing over the sea wall, causing severe damage.
